Zama Khumalo (18) from Mpumalanga was crowned the Idols SA season 16 winner on Sunday. Congratulatory messages have been pouring in for the singer on social media. Khumalo who auditioned earlier in the year had a jaw-dropping audition with her ‘pure’ and ‘crispy’ voice but the judges didn’t think she had enough confidence to win.
Judge Unathi Nkayi asked her, “Do you believe you have what it takes to win?” after saying she didn’t believe Zama knew what she had.
Randall Abrahams who is also a judge, went on to say he didn’t think Zama was ready to enter the competition but surprisingly gave her a yes – giving Zama a golden ticket through to Theatre Week. Every week, the audience watched Zama steadily grow her self-esteem which in the end, matched the powerful voice that earned her the title. Young girls are surely making their mark in the Idols SA competition as they show that dynamites come in small packages. Zama now joins the calibre of previous young female winners in the competition such as Paxton Fielies who was 16 when she entered the competition in 2017 and Yanga Sobetwa who won at the age of 17 in 2018.
